Santa Clara University, commonly known as simply SCU, is a private, co-educational Jesuit-affiliated university located in Santa Clara, which is a city in Santa Clara County, situated in the US state of California, founded in 1777, and incorporated in 1852.
SCU traces its roots back in 1777, when Santa Clara Church was founded by the Blessed Junipero Serra, a Spanish Franciscan friar, being the 8th in the chain of Franciscan missions, in Alta California, the place which later became the site of the university.
In 1851, at the request of the Bishop of Monterey, the Dominican Joseph Sadoc Alemany, the original Santa Clara College was established, by Italian Jesuits John Nobili and Michael Accolti, around Mission Santa Clara de Asís. In the same year, 2 of Santa Clara’s colleges were founded - Santa Clara College and the Methodist-founded California Wesleyan College, which is today known as the University of the Pacific, located in Stockton, California.
In 1857, Santa Clara College granted the first bachelor’s degree ever given in California, becoming University of Santa Clara, in 1912, with the addition of School of Law and School of Engineering. In 1925, the Leavey School of Business was added, becoming one of the 1st business schools in USA to receive national accreditation.
In 1961 women were also admitted at the university, which first started as a men’s-only educational institution, remaining so through most of its history, step which made Santa Clara University the 1st Catholic university in California to admit both men and women.
The athletic teams from SCU are known as the Santa Clara Broncos, who compete in the West Coast Conference, in 19 varsity sports, from which 9 are men’s and 10 are women’s. The men’s basketball team has historically been a strong program in the West Coast Conference, producing NBA stars such as Steve Nash and Kurt Rambis, making SCU experience victory many times in the past years. The Broncos are also well-known for their achievements in several other sports, besides men’s basketball, such as men’s and women’s soccer, including women’s basketball.
